Solar Energy Products for Homes

The use of solar energy for domestic purposes, as an alternative to electricity and CNG, is a fast growing trend in the United States of America. Learn through this article about the different solar energy products for homes.

Solar energy has been used by humans and every other living being since its inception. Solar energy is the heat and light from the Sun. The Earth receives 174 petawatts (PW) of solar radiation at the upper atmosphere and of that 70% is absorbed by clouds, oceans and land masses. Energy from the Sun is harnessed in two ways; Heat and Light energy. Following is a list of solar energy products for homes:

Solar Cooker: The shape of the solar cooker resembles a suitcase and a standard cooker is made up of five components with an outer box, that contains 3 or 4 containers for cooking. These cookers are available in different types, like the Box cooker, panel cooker, curved concentrator cookers, etc. Solar cookers have proven to be very economical and safe, as they do not need any fuel for its operations.

Solar Lighting: Solar lighting use photovoltaic cells to convert daylight into stored electricity for powering lighting devices when needed. For most individual fixtures no electrical wiring is required. As they only need sunlight to generate power, they can operate in far off places, where electricity is not available throughout. Solar lighting is environmentally friendly as they emit light-emitting diodes (LEDs) which reduce carbon releases in the atmosphere, and reduces the electricity as well as maintenance expenses.

Solar Batteries and Chargers: Most solar cells of your batteries and chargers are usually made of silicon. They are charged through the solar modules present in them; either chemical or lithium-ion. The electricity is produced by the transfer of energy from photon to electron, where electron is set free and allowed to flow. Once charged, they distribute their charge to gadget they are charging. Some rechargeable solar chargers have several batteries at a time and a USB port that can charge cell phones, GPS units or cameras. Solar cells produce no emissions or waste, and do not require external electrical sources to recharge batteries or charger dependent devices.

Solar Inverter: It is most expensive of all solar energy product. It helps to power most home appliances by changing the direct current (DC) electricity, generated from a photovoltaic panel into an alternating current (AC). They are mainly three types of solar inverter available; Stand-alone, Battery backup inverters and Grid-tie inverters. A solar inverter is made up of a set of solar panels, a battery to store electricity in, charge controller or a regulator and wiring.

Solar Water Heaters: Solar water heaters use solar energy for heating water. They include components like storage tanks and solar collectors. The storage tanks are well-insulated and have additional outlet and inlet connected to and from the solar collector. There are mainly two types of solar water heating systems; Active, in which circulating pumps and controls are available and Passive, in which they are not available. Besides heating water at homes, it can also be used to heat the swimming pool.

Solar Fountains: Solar fountains add to the beauty of the landscape without adding to its maintenance cost. They are solar powered and do not require any wiring, unless battery operated. The solar panel which is a component of the solar fountain can either be a part of the fountain or placed in a separate location all together.

Solar energy is easily available and will continue to be available, as long as the sun shines. Though the start-up cost of installing solar energy products are high, they come with long term benefits such as, being renewable, lessening the greenhouse effect and a decrease of our dependence on the expensive sources of non-renewable energy.
