Which heating source is better to save energy?

I was thinking about this yesterday as I started a fire in our fireplace. Which is better:
Running the heat to warm your home, or turning it off and starting a fire with wood?

When I first started hearing about solar panels, solar energy, using the power of the sun, etc, I always wondered how is solar energy used? I mean, solar energy is one of the hottest trends right now….but what can you do with it? I’ve looked into solar energy applications since then and here’s some of the uses I’ve found for solar energy:

  1. Supplement heating of your home and water supply using a passive solar system. If you’ve ever stepped out into the sunlight in winter and noticed a 20 degree or more temperature difference than in the shade you have an idea of how this works. This generally works best if your home is built with solar heating in mind in the design stages but you can add one to your current home inexpensively.
  2. Make dinner! Yes, really. As long as you plan ahead, you can make your meals using a solar oven. You can easily build build your own solar oven or purchase a simple one online for less than $25. The only downside to using a solar oven is that it does take much longer to cook than your oven in your home does.
  3. Generate enough electricity to power your home. Using solar panels (a box with solar cells in it that convert sunshine into electricity) on your roof or a flat stretch of land close to your home you can make your own electricity. The downside is that a professionally installed system can cost up to $20,000 and this puts generating your own power out of most peoples reach. But, if you are capable of following simple plans, it is possible to build your own solar panels for your home.

You just need an open mind and you will find many ways to figure out how solar energy is used around your home. Want to learn more about building your own inexpensive solar panels for your home? Go to http://www.diysolarwind.org now!
